Vintage Japanese Indigo Festival Jacket (Happi Coat) – Deadstock, Unworn

Sale price$175.00

Authentic vintage Japanese happi-style festival jacket, traditionally worn by men during matsuri (festivals) and community events.

This jacket is deadstock and unworn, sourced in unused condition from Japan.

It has never been worn or washed, retaining its original structure, indigo depth, and painted detailing.

This piece is not a robe — it is a short, open-front jacket designed to be worn open over bare skin or light layers. On men, it sits cropped and structured, creating a strong, graphic silhouette. On women, it fits in the style of a robe.

Crafted from hand-dyed indigo cotton with bold kanji detailing along the lapel and a large painted crest on the back. The interior sleeve reveals a contrasting patterned lining, a detail typically associated with higher-quality work and festival garments.

Shown here styled on a male mannequin to demonstrate its true intended proportions and fit. On women, this style often reads more like a robe; on men, it functions as a jacket.

A rare, character-rich piece with strong visual impact — ideal for collectors of Japanese workwear, festival garments, or statement vintage.

FIT & SIZING

Best suited to men’s small–medium depending on desired fit.

Designed to be worn open.

Please note: This garment is intentionally short. It is a jacket, not a robe.

Flat measurements available on request.

KANJI – CAREFUL TRANSLATION NOTE

The vertical kanji on the lapel read 「講青年会」 (Kō Seinenkai), which translates to:

“Youth Association / Young Men’s Group”

This type of text is commonly seen on festival jackets worn by members of local community or neighbourhood groups during celebrations and events.

The large painted symbol on the back appears to be a stylised crest or emblem, likely representing a specific group, district, or association rather than a literal word-for-word phrase.

(As with many festival garments, exact regional meaning can vary, and translations are provided conservatively and in good faith.)

STYLING NOTES

  • Traditionally styled over bare skin or a low-profile layer
  • Best paired with dark indigo, navy, or charcoal trousers
