Exceptional Mid-Century Cowichan Cardigan - Horse and Rider Motif, Fully Lined
Exceptional mid century hand knit Cowichan cardigan featuring an oversized horse and rider motif to the reverse with contrasting western inspired chest detail. A remarkable collector’s piece with strong graphic presence and beautifully preserved hand finished construction throughout.
Entirely hand knitted in a substantial heavy weight wool with full satin lining, also fully hand stitched into place. The workmanship is exceptional, from the dense textured knit to the sculptural ribbed trims and marbled buttons.
The ochre marl wool combined with the crimson, cream and black detailing gives the piece a folk art quality while still feeling rugged and wearable. The reverse horse and rider scene gives the cardigan a distinctly western and frontier feel rarely seen in surviving Cowichan pieces.
Held in private storage for over a decade, this is not a piece commonly encountered on the market today.
Condition is excellent overall with exceptionally clean lining and beautifully preserved wool. One small hole was recently discovered to the reverse from storage. This will be professionally repaired prior to sale and has been reflected in pricing.
