1970s Finn Karelia Psychedelic Velvet Maxi Dress | Made In Finland

A truly excellent original 1970s maxi dress by Finn Karelia, made in Finland. Made in an exceptionally soft and plush velvet that is amongst the best I’ve felt, it combines shades of violet, turquoise, cobalt, black and lavender in a psychedelic pattern that feels extremely current despite its age.

The line is clean and easy, falling smoothly from the shoulders without requiring a belt. The lace-up neckline creates the focal point, while the elasticated sleeves can be worn lower on the arm or pushed higher for a fuller sleeve shape. The quality of the fabric and print is outstanding, with colours that remain vivid and saturated decades later. This is one of those pieces that I just couldn’t stop photographing. It is just as vibrant and spectacular in life and it’s hard to believe it is actually vintage. 

Unlike many psychedelic maxi dresses of the 70s, this design feels refined rather than costume-like. It has a strong graphic presence and pairs as well with modern boots as it does with vintage accessories.
