1945 Beautime Formal New York Evening Gown - Padded Hem Detail

A truly remarkable documented 1945 evening gown by Beautime Formal of New York. This is one of those rare pieces that feels incredibly modern despite its age. The combination of the sharply defined sweetheart neckline, saturated pink ribbon detailing and sculptural padded hem gives the gown an almost contemporary, architectural quality. It would not look out of place alongside Japanese avant-garde designers of today.

Made from an exceptionally lustrous black fabric that catches light beautifully, the gown has a fitted bodice, gathered skirt and graduated ribbon trim at the neckline. The padded ribbon work at the hem creates an unusual wave-like effect that gives movement even when displayed.

The condition is remarkable for an 80-year-old formal gown. The black fabric remains rich and glossy, the ribbon detailing retains its original structure, and the hem is exceptionally clean with no soiling or wear. A true survivor.

Please note this is a petite-sized gown. Like many dresses of the period, the side metal zip terminates below the underarm rather than extending fully through the bodice. The neckline opening is quite small and takes careful dressing. Best suited to a petite frame with a smaller bust.
